"The Military Industrial Complex"

Of course, we need a high tech component in our defense, but a lot of the means do not need to be all that expensie. Examples are simple automatic handguns, explosives, 10.5 cm artillery and cheap drones. 

Unfortunately, two forces seem to coincede. The need of the defense industry to keep their R&D staff occupied and willingness of the military to buy expensive equipment. Far too many in the military find it more interesting to buy expensive equipment than to train troops, and we need a lot of troops to defend the expensive systems. 

In order to get an incresed defense ability, not only spending money, a strong political control is called for.

"Staten och kapitalet"

Vi måste naturligtvis ha en högteknoligisk del i vårt försvar, men mycket av försvarskrafterna behöver inte vara så dyra. Typexempel är enkla automatvapen, sprängämnen, 10,5 cm kanoner och billiga drönare. 

Tyvärr verkar två krafter samverka: Försvarsindustrins behov av att belägga sina utvecklingsavdelningar och militärens intresse av att köpa dyra saker. Många tycker det är roligare att köpa dyra saker än att utbilda trupp, och det är mycket trupp vi behöver för att kunna skydda de dyrbara systemen. 

För att vi ska få en ökad försvarsförmåga, och inte bara göra av med pengar, behövs en stark politisk styrning.

Smartest Today 

Swedish Army C-in-C Jonny Lindfors wants to speed up mobilization, and make it possible to rapidly arm civilians. (Patrik Dahlin, Omni, Diag 17:37)

Very wise. The defense capacity during the first eight to sixteen hours of an attack will most likely be decisive, especially in the Stockholm area. 

It would likely also be wise to make sure that more people get a short basic training.

Arméchefen Jonny Lindfors vill snabba upp mobiliseringen, och kunna beväpna civilister snabbt. (Patrik Dahlin, Omni, Diag 17:37)

Mycket klokt. Försvarsförmågan under de första 8 - 16 timmarna av ett anfall kommer sannolikt att vara avgörande, särskilt i Stockholmsområdet. 

Det vore formodligen också klokt att se till att fler får en kort grundläggande utbildning. 

26 February, Wednesday, Day 1714

Not Clear

Right now, the situation is not clear. Something seems to be happening, but one does now what. I am thinking like this: In the equation where Ukraine, Russian and the USA are included, and where Europe would want to be included, also China is a factor. What this means is not obvious, but one thing is for sure: The presence of a fourth component could mean that the equation is not optimized in a way that is desirable for Europe.

There is now much talk about European armament, to make our part of the world a bit more relevant. I hope that this process will not get stuck on the talk level, and that agile people will lead the process.

Osäkerhet

Läget verkar nu osäkert. Något verkar hända, men man vet inte vad. Jag tänker så här: I den ekvation där Ryssland, Ukraina och USA ingår, och där Europa skulle vilja ingå, ingår även Kina. Riktigt vad det betyder står inte klart, men en sak är säker: Närvaron av en fjärde komponent kan innebära att ekvationen inte optimeras på det sätt som Europa skulle önska. 

Det talas nu mycket om en Europeisk upprustning för att göra världsdelen lite mer relevant. Hoppas att upprutningen inte stannar på pratstadiet, och att några handlingskraftiga människor kan få styra processen.

The New Britons

Great Britain shall increase their defense spending from  2.3 to 2.5 percent of GNP. There seems to be a problem with financing this "effort". (Mattias Mangusson, Omni, Idag 21:16)

The British national budget is most likely as full of non-essential expenses as the Swedish, why it is difficult to understand the discussion.

Europe today needs a new Churchill, and this time he or she will most likely not come from Great Britain. Thatcher and Blair seems to have been the last statesmen from that island for a while. 

The Nordic Social Democrats

The Nordic Social Democrats are having an obvioulsy gloomy meeting in Oslo. (Joel Malmén, Omni, Idag 21:42)

One could wonder what they are talking about. Denmark's Mette Frederiksen stands out as a light in the darkness that is generally against defense forces.

Storbritannien ska öka sina försvarsutgifter från 2,3 till 2,5 procent av BNP. Man verkar ha problem med finansieringen av denna "satsning". (Mattias Mangusson, Omni, Idag 21:16)

Den brittiska statsbudgeten är förmodligen lika nedlastad med onödiga kostnader som den svenska, varför diskussionen är obegriplig. 

Europa behöver en ny Churchill, och denna gång lär han eller hon inte komma från Storbritannien. Thatcher och Blair verkar ha varit öns sista statsmän på ett tag. 

Nordens socialdemokrater

Nordens socialdemokrater har ett uppenbarligen glåmigt möte i Oslo. (Joel Malmén, Omni, Idag 21:42)

Man kan undra vad de talar om. Danmarks Mette Frederiksen verkar vara ljuset i det mörker som är allmänt negativt till försvar.

Promising

Text-TV reports that the Swedish Air Force is going to get the Taurus missile, with a range of 500 km . Promising for the Swedish defense forces. One can only hope that also the Navy will find a way to make itself relevant..

Text-TV rapporterar att svenska flygplan ska få Taurusroboten, med 500 km räckvidd. Det verkar finnas visst hopp om det svenska försvaret. Man kan hoppas att även flottan hittar ett sätt att göra sig relevant.

Is Merz being Ironic?

Merz does not trust the USA to maintain NATO's "mutual defence committments". (Anders Hovne, Omni, 23 feb.)

I think that the USA finds it diffcult to see the "mutual" in it, especially Germany's committments. 

In any case, it will be interesting to see if Merz can bring Europe into the world of grown ups.

Ironisk Merz?

Merz litar inte på att USA kommer att upprätthålla Natos "omsesidiga försvarsåtganden". (Anders Hovne, Omni, 23 feb.)

Jag tror att USA kan ha svårt att se ömsesidigheten, framförallt Tysklands. 

Det ska under alla omständigheter bli intressant att se om Merz kan föra in Europa i vuxenvärlden.

Depressing to be a European

Europe is reduced to about nothing i world politics. A considerable journey downwards for in about 200 years. How could this happen? The unification of Germany is most likely an important factor, as the difficulties in cooperation between France and Great Britain. 

Fundamentally, we have, however, destoryed ourselves. Value added taxes and labor laws in many forms and shapes are hampering economic growth. Ever expanding government organizations, both nationally and on the EU-level, is sucking the energy out of society. A disastrous pacifism has become fashionable. 

Could Europe save itself? Hardly, it must likely get much worse before it gets better. I am writing this despite being a basically optimistic person.

Tungt att vara europé

Europa har reducerats till ungefär ingenting i världspolitken. En avsevärd resa nedåt på cirka 200 år. Hur har det blivit så här? Tysklands enande har sannolikt mycket med saken att göra, likaså att Frankrike och Storbritannien har svårt att samarbet. 

I grunden torde dock ligga att vi har förstört oss själva. Moms och LAS i olika tappningar hämmar tillväxten. Svällande byråkratier, både på nationell och på EU-nivå, suger musten ur samhället. En förödande pacifism har blivit mode. 

Finns det någon väg ut för Europa? Knappast, det måste nog bli mycket sämre innan det blir bättre. Skriver detta trots att jag i grunden är en optimistisk person.
